Happy Birthday Lisa, Russ, and Other Observations

Howdy! Hope you’re doing well;

My dear harmony singer and sister from a different mom, Lisa Oliver Gray, had another anniversary of her 21st birthday just the other day. One year older and one year better, she is. Not only is she a wonderful person and one of my best friends, she’s my single tip-top favorite singer in a town bursting with great singers. The fact she has no record out of her own is a sin against nature and by golly one of these days we’re going to have to rectify that. Happy Birthday a few days late, classy lady. Every night singing with you is a thing of joy.

1970 night at the Family Wash Thursday was awesome. All songs from 1970 with a great lineup of all us locals. I did “Lola” by my beloved Kinks and sang “Hoochie Coochie Man”, the Allmans’ version. To stand singing with Audley Freed playing guitar on your left and Pat Buchanan playing on your right is better than eggs.

******

Had my second Leadership Music class all day yesterday (Friday). It’s an exhilerating thing to go through. Among many seminars we were treated to an intimate interview/performance of Cowboy Jack Clement, the man who first recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, the man who did so many great things. It was the sort of thing great memories are made of.

The Midwest Daddy gigs were so good they put the whole rhythm section in the hospital. Dave Jacques (bass) is recovering from an attack of viral meningitis and Paul Griffith is resting comfortably at home after some planned surgery to ameliorate some issues from another surgery before that. Love and well wishes to both.

******

My dog pees with excitement when I come home from a trip. Wouldn’t it be funny if people did the same thing? Picture a high school reunion where reunited friends wet their pants with joy. With older classes, I suppose that might really happen.

******

You know what looks like a fun place to work? That Honey Bunches of Oats plant. They all look like really nice, happy people. They haven’t sold me any cereal yet, though. I like Nathan’s Apple Jacks.

******

Last night Beth and I started singing “Quiche Lorraine” by the B-52s to Nathan. He doesn’t get it. Maybe it was our delivery. So I bought the proper album, “Wild Planet”, on iTunes, put it on my iPod and brought it to his bedroom and played it for him. He still doesn’t get it. He will eventually. Genius wins out against recalcitrance. By the way, iTunes is digital crack. When you can buy a record while propped up in bed, it’s too damn easy.

******

And happy birthday as well to Russ Riddle. Russ founded Cedar Creek Records. Without Russ you good buyers of Daddy’s records wouldn’t have those records. You wouldn’t have my “There, I Said It!” record. Russ is a true gentleman, a good and decent man, and everlasting proof that one fan you meet at a show can change your life.

******

I’m playing Norm’s tonight. I’m excited to see Davis Raines, who is also playing, because I haven’t seen him in years. He’s a great songwriter and we used to work together at Bookstar 15 years ago. Lisa can’t make it tonight (sigh), but Dan Seymour will be with me thumping on doghouse bass.

******

Speaking of auto-erotic asphyxiation, I don’t get it. You’re trying to improve on an orgasm? It’s an orgasm! What’s to improve? People die because they’re too hard to please.

God bless,

Tommy
